Bali, an island rich in culture, is known for its culinary heritage, handicrafts, traditional dances, and unique customs.
One of the island’s most sacred traditions is Ngelawang, a ritual performed to ward off misfortune and restore peace.

The term Ngelawang comes from the word lawang, meaning “door.”
This reflects the practice of moving from door to door or from one village to another while performing the Barong Bangkung dance.
Barong Bangkung, a representation of a mythical boar, is believed to possess protective powers against negative forces.
During the ritual, a group of children and teenagers, typically consisting of 8 to 15 participants, take on different roles—two as Barong dancers wearing full costumes, while others play traditional gamelan instruments.
The origins of Ngelawang are tied to the mythology of Dewi Ulun Danu, who transformed into a giant to help villagers drive away evil spirits.
Historically, the ritual was considered highly sacred, and any fallen Barong hair was collected by villagers as a revered object believed to bring good luck.
Today, while still maintaining its spiritual essence, Ngelawang is also performed as an artistic attraction, particularly in areas like Kuta and Ubud, where visitors can enjoy its mesmerizing spectacle.
The ritual is primarily conducted twice a year between Galungan and Kuningan, significant Hindu celebrations that symbolize the triumph of good over evil.
As the Barong Bangkung parades through the village, spectators gather to watch the performance.
Many offer small donations (punia) as a token of gratitude and respect for the ritual.
These contributions not only support the performers but also reinforce the communal spirit that is central to Balinese culture.
Although deeply religious in nature, Ngelawang is also an engaging and vibrant tradition that attracts both locals and tourists.
