According to the Lontar Dewa Purana Bangsul, a sacred Balinese scripture, Mpu Kuturan arrived at this southeastern shore—referred to as Silajong Watu Klotok—and built the temple to perform rituals dedicated to the balance of nature, rain, and agricultural fertility.
The temple remains an important spiritual center, believed to protect and bless the surrounding land and sea.
