Explore the Enchanting Pura Luhur Uluwatu, A Sacred Temple on Bali’s Southern Cliffs

Perched majestically atop a steep limestone cliff that towers 97 meters above the Indian Ocean, Pura Luhur Uluwatu is one of Bali’s most sacred and iconic sea temples.

Located in the traditional village of Pecatu, South Kuta, Badung Regency, this spiritual landmark is considered one of the Sad Kahyangan, the six key temples believed to guard the island from evil forces and balance the nine cardinal directions.

The temple’s origins trace back to the 11th century, when the revered sage Empu Kuturan introduced the concept of customary village law, known as Desa Adat, and established this temple as a sacred place of worship.

Centuries later, another holy figure, Dang Hyang Nirartha, ended his spiritual journey here by attaining Moksha—a divine liberation—an event that inspired the name “Luhur,” meaning “sublime” or “ascended.”

Surrounding the temple is a sacred grove known as Alas Kekeran, a protected forest that maintains the temple’s purity and spiritual balance. Pura Uluwatu is not a standalone shrine; it is connected with several pura pesanakan (affiliate temples) including Pura Bajurit, Pura Pererepan, Pura Kulat, Pura Dalem Selonding, and Pura Dalem Pangleburan.

These temples are intricately linked, particularly during the piodalan—a ceremonial anniversary—held every 210 days on Tuesday Kliwon of the Wuku Medangsia calendar. Here, devotees honor Dewa Rudra, a powerful manifestation of the Supreme God in Hindu belief.

Apart from its spiritual significance, Pura Luhur Uluwatu is also a hotspot for surfing enthusiasts. Just beneath the cliffs lies Pecatu Beach, renowned for its challenging waves and breathtaking coastal scenery.

This beach often hosts international surfing competitions, drawing athletes and spectators from around the world who are eager to embrace Bali’s wave culture and natural beauty.

Whether you’re a pilgrim seeking spiritual peace, a surfer chasing the perfect wave, or a traveler in awe of Bali’s cultural and natural marvels, Pura Luhur Uluwatu promises an unforgettable experience that harmoniously blends spiritual heritage, panoramic views, and vibrant coastal life. (BT)
