Curik-curik, A Traditional Balinese Game Rich in Cultural Values

Curik-curik is a traditional Balinese game that is still played by children in various villages today.

This game is not only a form of entertainment but also a part of cultural heritage that teaches values such as teamwork, strategy, and cooperation.

Accompanied by a special song, curik-curik involves simple yet meaningful movements, making it one of the folk games rich in educational and social elements.

This game is played by more than five people and does not require any special equipment, only a spacious, flat area.

Two players are chosen as gatekeepers, forming a doorway by holding hands.

Meanwhile, the other players line up in a formation resembling a snake and take turns passing through the gate.

Throughout the game, the players sing the traditional song “Curik-curik,” whose lyrics describe the story of the curik (Bali starling) in Balinese life.

When the song ends, the gatekeepers lower their hands to catch the player passing through, and the caught player must choose one of the gatekeepers as their team leader.

Once all the players have been caught and divided into two groups, the game continues with the final stage: a tug-of-war.

Both teams strive to pull their opponents across the designated boundary line.

The team that successfully pulls the other side over is declared the winner.

Besides providing fun, curik-curik also has educational benefits, such as fostering teamwork, developing strategy, and preserving local culture through songs and folk traditions.

As part of Bali’s cultural wisdom, this game is expected to endure and be passed down to future generations. (BT)
