One of the most captivating attractions in Karangasem Bali is Puri Agung Karangasem, renowned for its majestic architecture that blends Balinese, Chinese, and European styles.
The palace complex is divided into three main sections.
The front area, known as “Bencingah,” serves as the entrance and is used for traditional art performances.
The right and left wings of this area function as reception halls for guests.
The central section, called “Jaba Tengah,” features a lush garden with two ancient lychee trees. This area provides a serene and picturesque atmosphere.
The innermost section houses the main palace building, known as “Maskerdam,” named after Amsterdam in the Netherlands.
This name was chosen because the palace was constructed during a period of diplomatic relations between the King of Karangasem and the Dutch government.
Maskerdam served as the royal residence, while another building located behind it, named “London,” was designated as the living quarters for the royal family.
These names were inspired by the proximity of Amsterdam and London in Europe.
In front of the Maskerdam Palace stands “Bale Pemandesan,” a pavilion used for traditional tooth-filing ceremonies and as a temporary resting place for the remains of royal family members before cremation ceremonies (ngaben) take place.
A large winged lion statue is positioned facing the nearby pond, adding to the grandeur of the site.
Additionally, the palace complex includes “Bale Pawedaan” or “Bale Lunjuk,” where priests conduct religious rituals and prayers.
Another remarkable structure, “Bale Kambang” or “Gili,” is a floating pavilion located in the middle of a pond, serving as a meeting space for the royal family and a venue for dance and arts training.
