Bunut Bolong is a large banyan tree with a natural hole at its base, forming a unique natural tunnel. This tree is located in Manggissari Village, Pekutatan District, Jembrana Regency, Bali.
The name “Bunut Bolong” comes from the word “bunut,” meaning a tree with roots similar to a banyan, and “bolong,” which means hollow. The tree is estimated to be hundreds of years old, standing about 60 meters tall with a massive diameter.
The uniqueness of Bunut Bolong lies not only in its tunnel-like shape, which allows vehicles to pass through, but also in the mystical aura that surrounds it. Locals believe the tree possesses magical powers and associate it with various myths and taboos.
One of the most respected taboos is the prohibition against brides and grooms or newlywed couples passing under the tree. It is believed that violating this taboo could lead to misfortune, such as a failed marriage, divorce, or even fatal accidents.
Additionally, funeral processions or hearses are also forbidden from passing beneath the tree. To honor this belief, the local government has provided an alternative road to the west of Bunut Bolong, allowing wedding processions or funeral ceremonies to avoid passing under the tree.
Around the Bunut Bolong area, there are several sacred structures, such as Pura Pesimpangan Ratu Gede Dalem Ped to the northwest and the shrine of Ida Ratu Lingsir Putus to the east of the tree.
The presence of these temples and shrines adds to the sacred atmosphere surrounding Bunut Bolong. Additionally, small food stalls are available nearby, offering refreshments for visitors who wish to rest while enjoying the natural beauty of the area.
Bunut Bolong not only offers natural uniqueness and cultural significance but also serves as a silent witness to the traditions and beliefs of the Balinese people that have been preserved for generations. Visitors who wish to explore this site are advised to respect local customs and traditions. (BT)
