Tukad Unda Dam, Bali’s Hidden Gem of Tiered Waterfalls and Natural Serenity

Nestled between the regions of Klungkung and Karangasem lies one of Bali’s most picturesque natural wonders—Tukad Unda Dam.

Its cascading waters resemble a multi-level waterfall, creating a stunning visual spectacle especially admired from the bridge that spans this majestic river.

The name “Tukad Unda” is derived from the Balinese words “tukad,” meaning river, and “unda,” referring to layers or steps.

True to its name, the river is uniquely designed into three terraces, giving it the graceful appearance of tiered waterfalls.

This scenic spot is more than just a pretty view. Located in Banjar Lebah, Semarapura Kelod Kangin Village, Klungkung District, Tukad Unda is about a 45-minute drive from downtown Denpasar.

It has become a popular destination for both locals and tourists looking to immerse themselves in nature’s tranquility.

The Tukad Unda Dam was originally built during the Dutch colonial era and has since played a crucial role in irrigating the surrounding agricultural lands.

Fed by several rivers, including Tukad Didup, Tukad Telaga Waja, and Tukad Palangan, the river maintains a strong, steady flow throughout the year.

Visitors can enjoy various activities at the dam site. Its sparkling clear waters and the lush natural surroundings make it an ideal location for photography—especially for pre-wedding shoots, which are now a popular trend at this spot.

When conditions are safe, swimming and wading in the cool waters are also favorite pastimes.

Families with children should remain cautious and ensure little ones are always supervised, especially when water levels are high.

In May 2017, a new recreational area known as “Kali Unda Tourism” was developed on the eastern side of the dam.

This addition offers a relaxing space where visitors can unwind and appreciate the beauty of the flowing water from a fresh perspective.

Whether you’re a nature lover, a photography enthusiast, or simply looking for a peaceful retreat, Tukad Unda Dam offers an unforgettable experience in the heart of Bali. (BT)
